Same here, I have a account that was hacked and I just never got it released, got a email the other day saying my char Osiris was renamed.

Osiris was certainly part of some automatic renaming routine because of the lore of the Uldum area.

Guess I better hope we don't have a Babylon 5 or Tenchi related expansion packs, if so I am doomed.

I'm playing horde alts on Sentinels...which is an RP server...and if I wanted to I could spend all day reporting names that blatantly violate the naming policy. It's pretty silly.

Then you do randoms/BGs and mix with people from nonRPs servers...and yeah. There's a naming policy?

Personally, I like immersion and hate the stupid/cute/whatever names. I'm not into RPing, but I figure, Bliz goes thru a lot of trouble to create really cool looking content and lore that we all pay plenty to enjoy, and my enjoyment is diminished when I have to see moronic character names.

I think it's a generation gap thing - or just the fact that most people who play WoW are idiots. Back in the early days of MMORPGs, it was pretty rare to see "stupid names" - now it's common. Of course, back in the early days players were more mature in general and had an appreciation for what they were playing and enjoying - where many players now are selfish brats that don't give a crap about anything.

Ultimate, it doesn't matter much. You see a player with a stupid name and you pretty much knowthey're stupid and you avoid them, so at least there's that.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that

Unfortunately, some of the best pvp'ers I've ever encountered in game had stupid names (Pewpewkilla, Buttsniffa, etc.)

They'll only change if people report them. Bliz handles most of their "law enforcement" passively - they wait for players to make a fuss, and then they act. It's the same way for most bots.

This character has not logged on in about 3 years. I don't think it was reported.

Check the armory and see if the name shows back up. I'm wondering if some butthead wanted the name, searched the armory and turned it in so they could grab the name later.

I don't think that works. When a name is changed, it goes on the blacklist and can't be used again.

I see characters walking around with NPC names all the time. If they aren't reported, they aren't changed.

I was a little disconcerted when Lich King came out because I spotted 3 new quest givers (NE/dryads) with names of toons I'd had since Vanilla. I haven't had any trouble though.

And as far as people that name their toons with stupid names... I mean really stupid names... yeah, I don't report those. I figure it's fair warning to anybody who is thinking about grouping with them.

And those with Ikilljoo and Ipwnuall are usually the guys you see in Dalaran losing duels over and over and over again....

Syrus, the only thing I can think of is that Blizzard may have a cut-off date for saving names? You would think once the name was taken, even if the subscription was cancelled, that it would be saved. Maybe there was a hiccup in the database and it was flagged as available.

Conspiracy theory of Blizz employee wanting name for their own actually sounds more reasonable compared to that. <straightface>
