is there one? i have just been gathering fragments and clicking "solve" when i have enough to do so. getting all grey junk so far.

i read somewhere that i should have waited until 100 skill to start solving, since u stop getting gathering skill gains at that point. also read on a thread on this board about saving all your troll fragments til 450 skill to use to get that epic sword. why is that? i thought that the "solves" just go in a sequence...like you have to make all the crappy greys first then u start making better stuff.

what does your actual archaeology skill level do, other than determine what zones you can dig in?

and what are those green archaeology items you sometimes find, and can buy on the AH too?

i am confused.

There is no sequence on solves. It's based on your skill level what random items you get on the Solve. You save them because you can't get the epic sword till a certain skill level (450 I think?). So you save all your Troll fragments till you hit the right skill level, and then chain solve and you'll have a better chance at finding it than wasting them all on skill ups.

I've just been solving as I go. I got the fossilized companion pet when I was only about level 60 which was titled as a rare artifact by the game I think instead of the usual grey stuff. So there is at least some stuff besides the greys as you go - but if you save until the end you probably have a shot at all of them anyway so that's probably still the best advice if you are a min/max person.

Just a tip

DO NOT SOLVE ANYTHING until you hit at least 100 skill.
YES, that is slow from 70+ but
you do get skill ups from digging and finding.

If you solve before 100, you will end up hitting the "solve only" part....and then it goes much slower.

tip for 2H str melee. do not solve Troll fragments. get capped to 375. stockpile your solves until you have min 2K troll fragments and enough dorf/nelf and fossils. Then skill up to 525 on solves....and THEN do your troll fragments.

...if you are lucky, you can thank me later...

(to those who say you only need 450 for "you know what", fine....ok. But I prefer to power to 525 just to be sure there is no % difference between 450 and 525).

Yeah I can't listen to that chic talk for 67 minutes. I made it to when she started saying hi to people in the chat room and turned it off.

Not 375. 450 minimum.

Staying at 375 prevents Vashj'ir and Twilight Highlands from having dig sites, which are a pain to dig and only slow you down if you're after troll frags. Vashj'ir's sites are big, really big. In TH, you have to dodge L84-85 mobs and the opposing faction (the sites are in questing/daily spots).

Though I think you could just stay at 445 and not open Vashj'ir and TH, but it's safer to stay at 375. Heh, no temptation to solve one or the possibility of a moment of inattentiveness causing a screwup.

I'm sitting around 410 skill atm.

I don't buy this 'save all your fragments until 450 skill' nonsense. Since it seems that the chance of a rare showing up in any race is fairly random, you basically have to grind through commons until you get lucky and a rare shows up. By saving your troll fragments, you are actually prolonging the skillup process (because you have to make more trips to digsites).

I say solve every artifact as soon as you get it. Save the special fragments for the rares.

I believe that if you are doing archaelogy only to get that one sword, you might find it more frustrating than you are willing to put up with. You will get all the items in time, it's simply a matter of how much time.
