VN has been total crap for going on a week now. Taking anywhere from 10 minutes(literally) to load a page to continuous service unavailable pages all the while the rest of the net is working fine. At first I assumed it was some maint. work going on but after the 2nd day I just figured something broke and it's taking forever to get support on it.

Yea, its been going on for a while now. We've been told its due to ddos attacks. Its IGN as well as VN because the IGN side boards keep going down as well. Its all on the same network. In fact i'd almost bet the target is IGN since they're a bigger target and we just happen to be lucky enough to get caught up in it since we're on the IGN network.

So we know what it is and we know that the IGN network engineers are working on it but that's about it. No idea when they'll have it sorted out, i'm not sure they've had to deal with large scale ddos attacks before so it might take some time. The boards do seem more stable with more up-time than they were having about a week ago so they might be slowly getting a handle on it.

Null route the DDoS at the provider level or toss around a few access lists.

The web based text game I play had a ddos attack called on it by the seediest location on the net whose name I won't give the luxury of mentioning. Anyhow, they crashed 2 of the servers causing a massive guild attack to falter and literally years of work was lost by the players in the war as some were able to attack and others were not.... anyhow they had to to go to their provider who then had to go directly to the ISP who ended up closing all access to the specific ip's being attacked. It took them over a week to get things settled and in the meantime they had to give the game servers new IP's for a temp workaround.

tl;dr

ddos attacks suck and so do the people who perform them

french to me sprawl...10 years ago i knew my way around networks and computers about 100X better than i do now. i've forgotten most of it and the rest has changed over the years.

for all we know they could stop them right now but choose not to so they can collect data on whose doing it for legal action. i'd be fine with another weeks worth of this crap if it results in the people behind it spending a few years in jail

Unfortunately you have to be prepared for them or hope your ISP is. I run a few data centers, so I deal with them, or my employees do, daily. I do agree, they can be a beotch. We've seen some good ones over the years where we've been forced to shuffle around IPs.
