There definitely is not a hard and fast rule about updating existing content. If we feel revamping existing content makes sense in the current state of the game and lore -- and we think it will be fun -- sure, it's a possibility. You definitely shouldn't expect this every patch though. In the grand scheme of World of Warcraft's history, we've reintroduced very little existing content per patch and expansion.

(...)Is your definition of rehashed content deduced to the names of bosses being the same? There will always be recurring characters in World of Warcraft, as there is in any fantasy story telling.

I agree with Spooky here. PR is managing people and their perceptions. The focus should be the customer, not the developers.

I really am not aware of any other business in the world other than MMO's where the seller tells the buyer what "we think".

It makes me wonder if their artists are running the show. In normal companies, the process goes roughly something like:

1. Marketing analysis, resulting in marketing wish list.
2. Engineering feasibility study and resource analysis.
3. Management approval for feasible creation.
4. Artists create art while engineers create basic mechanical framework.
5. Everyone reevaluates feasibility and cost vs delivery expectations.
6. Alpha!
7. Demos are presented of basic concepts and features for marketing and focus-group studies.
8. Re-evaluate priorities based on marketing/demo feedback.
9. Engineers firm up structure
10. Artists massage aesthetic concepts to fit engineering structure.
11. Tweak.
12. Beta!
13. Public/customer feedback begins.
14. Continued analysis and polish on established priorities.
15. Signoff on 1.0 RC.
16. Release!

Now, take blizzard. They did the above with classic and BC, made us wonder with WotLK and 4.0/cataclysm was just WTF. It's like they took the established process, put each point into a square of a dartboard, had some beers and threw darts to see what came next, with the artists running the show.

"Hey, this sounds cool. Let's have the engineers build that!"
"Uh, guys, that won't work so well. There's tons of exploits that really can't be fixed without some fundamental redesign."
"No, no, no. We like our idea. It sounds cool. Everyone loves our art. Nobody loves your code. DO EET!"
"lol...ok. You asked for it..."
Voila. Arenas are born.

They aren't though.

They have catered to Nancy Homemaker, the housewife who can DPS on the watered down classes that take no skill to play.

WoW is now full of players that aren't gamers. Average Joe, the terribad player is the player base now. And these people will take anything they are given and play it happily becuz they have a fluff pet that growls *squee how cute*..the subs keep growing becuz they keep getting more mouth breathers.

The only ones complaining are the gamers. Who will always be a minority. So when the fanbois descend, they will be armed with the growing sub numbers and think that the game is better than ever.

AS a game, WoW is debilitating towards mediocrity. As a juggernaut, it is still steaming on (and I mean steaming, as in a pile of).

... and at the same time, people are complaining about the increased difficulty of heroics and/or raids.

SWTOR: 50 Jedi Shadow (Tank), 50 Sith Marauder (Annihilation).
LOTRO: Lifetime account, playing very casually.
WoW: Both accounts canceled for now.
GW2: Future Warrior.

Remember when Steve Jobs did his GC impression and told everyone that they were having problems with their crappy iphones dropping calls because they were "holding it wrong"?
