Blizzard announced the Cenarion Hatchling pet that 100% of the proceeds would go to the Japan Red Cross relief fund. At least, until July 31st 2011. This would seem to indicate that any funds raised by Blizzard in regards to this pet after that point would be pure profit for Blizzard (after miniscule development costs for deploying the pet anyway).
Am I the only one that thinks this is wrong? I mean, I certainly appreciate Blizzard's attempt to raise money for Red Cross for Japan, but I can't help but see that Blizzard is going to make money off of this. At what point is it wrong that a corporation makes a profit in regards to this situation?
Until recently I've been pretty sure that anything they make after that would be blood money. Pretty black and white. Now I can't help but look at it in a different way. Maybe there is a grey area in that any money raised from this point on wouldn't have been raised anyway. People that spend the $10 on the pet wouldn't have donated the $10 to the Red Cross instead. As angry as that idea might make me, I can't dispute the fact that it is true. They get something, be it real or virtual, and get to feel good about it too instead of just the good feelings.
God I'm confused. I lost someone dear to me in the earthquake, so any time someone, especially a corporation, might make even a dime ruffles my feathers.
Right now I'm really not sure if I want to vehemently hate or offer mediocre praise to Blizzard.
The bad thing is I made a post about this to Blizzard's forums before posting here. Yes, the fanbois jumped all over me. I shouldn't have expected any different. I hate to say it though, they may have made me rethink my position on corporate sponsored charity.[/quote]
YOU CANT BE THAT NAIVE!!! There is no such thing as coporate charity....

Were they fanbois, or, you know, just regular people that think that selling something and giving 100% of the proceeds to Japan is a good thing?

So would you feel comfortable if they stopped offering the pet for purchase after the charitable period? I suppose that's a fair request. If their heart is completely in the right place it shouldn't be a problem. You should write them and voice your concerns.
As others have pointed out, Blizzard is a business - but being for-profit doesn't mean its always a zero sum game. A company could choose to eat the development and infrastructure costs, for the life of the product, if they wanted to.

1) Red Cross is bullcrap, something like 12 cents to every dollar is used to help people. To me that is unacceptable.
2) The only reason they are doing this is for the tax write off.

1.) http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3277
Try around 90%, as opposed to that 12% you pulled out of your ass.
2.) Tax write off, publicity AND most of that money will go to help some folks over in japan or others in need. Win for all, as someone previously posted.

This isn't a politically charged question at all, just an honest question because I am curious: do you watch Fox News, and/or listen to AM radio?

Well that is pretty awesome. In fact I did not pull that number out of my ass, I took the information word of mouth from other people. Glad to see they were wrong.

First of all, don't sugar coat it, that is most certainly a politically charged question. Second, my news media of choice is ABC.
