Is the gear better in these than the stuff that drops in Northrend dungeons? I have never done one and was wondering if I should bother.

Northrend green quest gear is better than what you would find in BC heroics.

Gearing prior to 85 is a complete waste of time unless you just really enjoy the grind.

Dont' bother ever. The gear from the next xpac is always beter stat wise unless you're grinding high end raids adn tier gear. And even then it's not worth it since queues now go by ilvl.

WoW has always significantly stat inflated gear with each xpac. There would little incentive to go play the new xpac if one did not get a bigger, shinier carrot for their efforts

If you were considering jumping into BC Heroics, just go for the WOTLK normal dungeons as soon as you can for substantial upgrades!!

The only BC gear that will last you well into WOTLK would be Sunwell gear - some of which will last you to 80 (from what I understood) - but only worth trying to get if you have a half dozen good friends (at level 85) to zoom you through there.

the reason for this is they wanted people to be able to get new stuff right off when the expansion came out. everyone was already geared up with BC gear and they wanted the quest gear in the first zone of the expansion to be worthwhile.

so from the standpoint of expansion release it makes sense, but further down the road where we are now and the only people progressing to northrend are those leveling up who haven't done any BC heroics it seems stupid because you'd have to work harder to get worse gear.

Actually, the reason for it is so everyone's capable of doing the content in the new expansion pack. If the new content was balanced around characters with the top end raid gear it would be brutal for ungeared characters. If the content was balanced around toons in greens it would be trivial for geared toons. By making large jumps in gear they can get everyone on equal footing gearwise.
