The NGE was as far beyond sweeping changes as a nuclear bomb is beyond a thrown rock. Someone that played vanilla WOW although they would be confused at first would recognize the game interactions. Imagine having popular but not "Warcrafty" classes being wiped from the game. Imagine that the remaining classes being so changed that re-rolling is probably the best way to stick with the game.

There are changes and there are complete rewrites. Imagine taking KOTOR and turning it into Jedi Academy. That is the scope of what happened in that game regarding combat. Now take Asheron's Call or Darkfall or any other skill based game and turn it into WoW, with less choices. That is what happened to the progression system and character development system.

Both sets of major changes, the combat upgrade and then the NGE, were successively worst than the original iteration of the game.... which was fun for a few weeks.
I'm actually surprised the game survived so long. I've often wondered if SOE made any money off of suckers that thought they were getting SWTOR with SWG or something.

Its good that it is finally shutting down. Hopefully it will be one more wake up call to game buyers and developers alike.

Actually, if you have ever worked with programmers/developers, you will know that they just don't care. What they program/develop is their baby and everyone else in the universe is wrong and they are right. In order to prove them wrong, you have to pain them into a corner and not give them any possible way out. Even then, they are still right and everyone else is stupid.
