I did minecraft until I was doing it in my sleep. I actually felt like I wasn't sleeping because I kept digging, digging, digging... It was mentally disruptive to me more than any other game. Not sure why. I have Wow dreams but they don't dominate my thoughts like minecraft did. It was great fun while it lasted though

I, on the other hand, prefer a command-line system 'cause i'm so hardcore
/north /north *You encounter an [Avatar of the god Set]!*
/cast sheild *sheild spell unavailable*
/csat shield *csat: unknown command*
*[Avatar of Set] beheads [Peasant]*

Yeah I keep starting from scratch since it's beta and all. I've spent so many hours building 'my first base' lol

I've been playing Creeper World while getting my home LAN setup with a linux backup server and upgrading components to support the newer games. Fairly simple game, but entertaining.

ASCII graphics? Watching youtubes to see what makes this fun. Seems to have a following of people.
Well that was fun. Watched hours of tutorials, got into the game, many sleepless nights. I don't think there is a more complex game out there. The programmer has really good ideas. I don't mind the graphics (or lack thereof) but the UI and controls bother me. I wish there were games like that with more polish to them.

There are a couple essentials for Dwarf Fortress, IMHO:
1. Dwarf Therapist. Great mod that gives you much better overview and control of jobs.
2. A tile / graphic mod. I like http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php
