on my server CERTAIN cut gems sell for a ridiculous overprice while others sell for below raw mat prices. you need to know which ones sell well. i hate having to gem up my characters because i have to either pay those ridiculous prices or spend hours in trade chat trying to find someone while screening all the rubbish conversations that go on there.
i think another option to make money is inscriptions. most glyphs cost only a few gold to make, but i regularly see certain glyphs on the AH for hundreds of gold. i priced the glyphs when i was doing my alt and a bunch of them cost like 10g in mats but were selling for 200g on the AH....price never went down after a few days and i ended up paying it for some of em.

I've made a ton of gold selling cut gems.
But I always make a ton of gold selling something.
Playes are lazy, players are antisocial, players want everything now and have zero patience.
And it all leads to profit.
If you're in a decent guild or have friends, you most likely know crafters that'll make things for free if you have raw materials that are way cheaper than finished goods. If you have guild/friends AND you have patience (or use your nogging and anticipate your needs and get stuff before you need it, thus eliminating the OMG I got an upgrade and need gems now factor), you can save a lot of gold.
When I was playing more I would make myself available as possible for guildies, cut gems by mail, etc, and I would still have guildies and friends piss away gold rather than wait even an hour for me to finish an instance or something...or they'd buy the gems I had listed.
Most modern MMORPG players have no patience and want whatever they want NOW. It's one of the basic in-game economic principles I leverage to stay rich...so whatever.

its not about laziness....like you said you need connections via guild or friends to get stuff crafted for free/discount. in a small guild or no guild or on a new server a player can't get those deals.
its more about greed...like you said you make a ton of money off people. even if i spend time in trade chat trying to get stuff direct from the player, many of the offers want high prices + your mats to do something. finding someone to do an item for free or "tips" or even a reasonable price is rare these days in my experience...everyone wants to rip each other off instead. i don't blame them really though since its a game not a charity...but greed is what it is.

Making gold with JC is pretty much dead nowadays. Gem prices dropped very low. If Bliztard ever adds epic gems, it will work again though.
Wanna make gold nowadays? Take enchanting, get mats through PvP, sell enchants - or just sell the mats if you don't have enchanting - profit.
