Yah I'm actually currently downloading the open beta client (preorder the game on steam and get into the open beta). Plus the game is $5 off if you preorder. Playing with Naly, Shiz dl'd it today too.
Looks pretty fun, albeit twitchy fps gameplay.

I played a bunch last night, it's like TF2 + RPG skill trees + persistent characters. I am not planning on subbing for the big risk-map-like-RvR game, at least not at first. The pug matches last 10-20 minutes, they start up in 30 seconds or less, and they're pretty damn fun.
But, it is totally an FPS (well, third person shooter) so there isn't a ton of RPG feel to it. Your character gets:
A melee weapon
A ranged weapon
A "special" weapon - healing for the medic, turret building/repair for the robotic class etc
A jetpack
Then you get 3 "offhand" weapons, these are like your typical RPG spells. The robotics class can use force fields, turrets, stealth detectors, healing crates, rocket launcher turrets, cannon turrets, and all sorts of fun toys. I didn't go too deep into the medic but I have a healing grenade, a PBAE heal+hot, and a self HoT.
Then you get one special class-only ability that is on a long recharge timer and takes time to build up before you can use it. I actually totally forgot about this one and didn't get to use it at all last night.
There are 100 levels in the game, but you only gain abilities that make you stronger up to level 30. (Which takes 20-40 hours of gameplay, roughly, to achieve). A buddy of mine that I was playing with had a level 30 Medic already in the beta and he got the game a couple weeks ago. Capping characters (as far as skills) will be pretty easy, I imagine many players will cap one of each class at level 30 then switch depending who is online.
Levels 31-100 are for "flair", you get weapons, armor, and dyes to make your character look more badass. And also so when people see a level 100 assault coming at you, you know that person has put serious time into their class and they're probably pretty damn good.
Anyway this is about all I know right now, I preordered to a) get into the beta and b) save $5 off of the final product. I think as a standalone game it's a lot of fun, but as a monthly sub for the territory control endgame? I'm not so sure, but I haven't played it yet so I'll reserve my opinions.

Questions if you know:
1. Am I right to assume that the ‘subscription end of the game’ is exactly like Planetside for the most part?
2. If you level off line in the standalone non subscription matches, do you carry that over in the pay to play part, or is that two different types of games with no link to one another?
3. Can you elaborate a bit on your personal feelings of this game? For example – I loved planetside, I actually left DAOC for a few months to focus there, would I feel the same love in this game as I did there or does it pale in comparison and still has no replacement for DAOC etc?
4. So am I correct to take what you said as you jump in the game and must instan que to enter the match etc? Or is there a pve way to level etc or is it all instance rvr to level / rank up etc?
TY. I won’t get in until perhaps Friday due to my accident etc.
Can you give me your honest rating of this game? I gave star trek online a 2.5 / 10.....
but I'm very interested in this game... and can I switch to FPS or am i forced with the over the head shooter look?
From what I understand, it’s like the Call of Duty leveling system with weapons, add on’s and armor look etc, but with a futuristic look? Can you get any info on the pay to play structure and system / planetside sounding thing?

1.) Didn't play Planetside, I dunno.
2.) Your characters are the same in the sub and for the standalone game afaik. The sub just allows you to join in the guild vs guild action and affect the realm map.
3.) I see this game as another MMO I'll probably play for 3-4 months, cap level, see all there is to see, then quit. But for $45 investment that's a good deal to me. When they add new content / patch stuff in I'll come back because there is no sub.
4.) There is PvE but I don't care much for PvE in any game so I don't really see a reason to do it. I have heard lvls 5-10 are faster in PvE than PvP though. And yeah you enter "missions" - either PvE or PvP, in a "City Hub" which is just like a 3D MMO city area where you train skills, craft, etc.
No switching to FPS, it's a 3rd person shooter.
Other questions you want answered I found out yesterday with about 20 min on their website, you could prolly find out answers quicker than posting on VN.

Hmm. This kind of intrigues me. Is the combat more FPS like (if you aim at the target's hit box, then you hit them every time) or MMO style (there is still a to-hit roll)? Would this be fun solo and in pugs or are you just asking to be dominated by pre-mades? I used to be pretty decent at FPS back in the days of the first few Quakes, but my FPS skills are pretty bad after a decade of Dark Age.

I am by no means an expert on the game, but this is my understanding:
Premades can only be made of 4 players, and in pug matches the groups are 12-20 vs 12-20. So premades would only make up a % of a whole pug team. You can't join a 12 man match with a 12 man guild group. You CAN do this in the guild-vs-guild part of the game, and in order to take over territories you must.
As far as combat, it's an FPS/RPG hybrid.
FPS-like:
- You aim and hit people, there is no dice roll or evade/miss
- There is only 1 hit-box (no headshots)
RPG-like:
- Your damage is based off of your weapon type and class, and how many points you spec into your weapon.
- You can change your weapon loadouts/abilities at spawn points (not your spec, that's different). If you get into a map as a healer to find out that you're fighting 100% at choke points you could drop your self heal and pick up a PBAE heal, for instance. It seems like the best puggers so far are the ones who know the maps and set their class up with abilities for that map type.
My FPS skills are pretty weak too but I didn't feel too outclassed in the game. As a Medic I can just point at my friendly meat shields and keep them up (two kinds of heals on the heal gun - slow and low mana and fast w/high mana), and as a Robotics my turrets do 90% of my dps and auto target/shoot anyway. I don't think I'd play an Assault because it requires being pretty decent at FPS's, or an Assassin because that's not really my playstyle. I'll probably start with a Medic at release and have a Robotics alt.
