since my wife and I are both into photog, I am thinking about picking up a second camera, and the 40D is sitting at the top of the list, with the 5D mkI just under it. Other than the obvious, price, why should I get the 40D instead of the 5D?

Ive never used a 5dMKI, only my 5dmkII's, so I cant say how it performs.

Through the first year of "professional" work I did as an automotive photographer, I used a 40D. And the majority of images that I still sell prints of, are 40D shots. Its light, great high ISO abilities considering how old the body is. I really don't know what would be the better choice. Two portrait photographer friends of mine use 5D MKI's and love them more than I love cotton candy, which is saying a lot.

40D is crop though right? and the 5d isn't ?


If that's the case you might have to consider that getting the focal lengths you're used to on a crop-camera for a full-format one, is going to cost you

the only full frame cameras that canon makes (that I know of) are the 1D and 5D, all the rest are either 1.5 or 1.6 crop factor. The 40D is 1.6
