I'm not positive, but isn't that an OCD type of thing? (In that case you look for a therapist.)

Edit: Well, there you go. Beaten to it with better info.

That's what I was going to ask.

My oldest daughter did that for a little while, right on the top of her head where the hair swirl is. She had a nice little bald spot. Fortunately the rest of her hair combed over it but the short hairs growing back in made it look a little funky for a while. She was in the first or second grade at this point and it was just kind of a nervous habit for her. We just had to talk to her about it and keep an eye on her and interrupt her if she started doing it again. It didn't take long before she stopped altogether. I don't know what we would have done if she kept at it though.

I'd definitely take her to see a mental health professional.

I concur. Be careful if they just want to push meds on her, though.

i had that when i was a kid. its usually stress related i believe, i'd talk to her and see if theres anything bothering her. my own take on it when i self analyzed myeslf back when it was happening was i was finding an external way to feel emotional pain the same way some people cut themselves or do other similar things to cause physical pain when their problem is a needed outlet for emotional pain or stress.

that may not apply to your daughter at all though, thats just the conclusion i came to for my own problem. like any obsessive action if you can stop doing it for a few weeks you can ditch the compulsion. try to get her to do some other harmless action with her hands to keep them occupied whenever she gets the urge to pull hair. mostly its just breaking the habit but if it is caused by stress you should really find out whats bothering her and help her resolve it. i'd check for other habitual things like nail biting too just in case.
