i know you said you were getting into sushi .... normally i hate sushi, my daughter loves it though ... she's been good lately so we took her to a sushi bar
the waitress recommended a few things and it was really awesome .... this is the closest description to the stuff i ate .... thought i would share
Alameda Roll (they called it DragonFly)
cucumber, real crab meat, Unagi & Tobiko wrapped with sliced cucumber topped with house sauce
Shrimp Tempura Roll
deep fried shrimps with avocado and cucumber topped with house special sauce

We did have sushi, but nothing out of the ordinary for us, yet. I guess I'm a bit chicken when it comes to trying the eel. I purchased a sushi-making kit online and I can't wait for it to get here. I'm looking forward to making my own.

i would have been squeemish if i had known, i am not a fish person, the low-tide fish stench has to be gone for me to eat it ... seaweed is nasty ...
pretty much the only way i *normally* eat fish is fried ... fried catfish
this stuff was pretty awesome though .... it was a good experience

Sushi-grade fish generally doesn't smell fishy. In fact, no good fish should smell fishy.
Fried catfish, eh? That's one of my all-time favorites. I remember all the fish fries when I was a kid. The best fried catfish is so crispy on the outside that you can eat the tail and it crunches just like a potato chip!

What Lyn said is true. Especially if you're at a sushi place and it smells fishy - don't eat there! Sushi fish is supposed to be ultra fresh.

I tried a raw scallop once and it ranks right up there with the most disgusting things I've tried. The more I chewed it the worse it got.
I'd like to give real sushi a whirl though sans cucumber.
