how do you do it? i noticed that i eat very little fruits/vegetables in the day. on a regular day the only fruits/vegetables i eat all day is probably a glass of orange juice, a banana, some lettuce on my sandwich, and then at dinner i have a small serving of mixed vegetables.

so how do you make sure to get enough fruits/vegetables? eat a salad with every meal? drink tons of v8 juice? or is this example amount i listed enough for a person per day? i take a multi-vitamin but still seems like i am not eating enough from all the articles i read on how important fruits/veggies are for health.

it does not help that i am a single guy and not a great cook and if i buy something like a cantaloupe or pineapple or if i make a large vegetable dish half of it will get spoiled and wasted since i cannot eat it all myself before it spoils...so i end up eating easy to make foods like a sandwich or just making frozen mixed vegetables (which don't seem very healthy, since like 1/3 of it is corn).

I don't know how anyone gets their daily allowance.

I eat a salad every couple days and have 1 or 2 servings of veggies at dinner. If I get a sandwich, I try to have lettuce/spinach and tomatoes on it. If I snack at night, I try to snack on things like sliced cucumbers, radishes, celery, olives, kohlrabi, etc. I definitely don't eat as much fruit as I should, though I will buy a bag of tangerines or tangelos from time to time. Fruit seems to go bad too fast, so I don't buy it a lot.

You can buy other kinds of vegies other than mixed vegies. Frozen vegies are supposed to be as good as fresh.

Keep a container of cut up vegies in the fridge. Spend a few minutes after a run to the store and cut them up so you can just grab them for snacks. Celery, cherry tomatoes, carrots, sugar snap peas, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. You can even buy those already cut up and ready to snack on. I would imagine the already cut up packs would be good for a single person since you dont have to buy a 2lb head of broccoli at once and try and eat it all.

I cook for a family, so I am not sure what to do for a single person. I put vegies in all of my meals and have 1 or 2 on the side as well.

We try pretty hard to have balanced dinners. I'm failing for lunches and breakfast.

I eat a LOT of things that eat veggies, does that count?

keep a small bag of apples and oranges and bananas around. those are easy on the go go-to foods.

you can buy salad makings or even just cut up veggies at a salad bar in teh store or where ever. get as much, or as little, as you want. things you like.

get a couple of bottles of salad dressing to dip them in.

they do fresh cut up fruit here also.

ever do a bowl of cereal? quick? easy? throw in a handful of frozen blueberries.

and there are your fresh fruit juices. be sure to make sure you drink 100% fruit, and nothing that says drink.

grape drink isnt all fruit juice.

you could always make a bloody mary and get your veggies that way

As a now severe diabetic I have found eliminating as much grain pasta and potatoes from my diet has worked wonders with my vegetable intake.

Limit your starches to the recommended 2 servings per day you have to replace the rest with vegetables, Americans on average probably eat at a minimum 6 or 7 servings of starch.

"carbs" should be limited by someone with diabetes

Some fruits and veggies have more "carbs" than others.

Reading labels of canned or frozen fruits helps alot.

My husband is a diabetic now and several companies are sweetening canned fruits with splenda.

They are very good.

On Fruits I just by fresh what ever is in season. You are right though pkhere just like salt most processed foods have added sugars. And yeah carbs are the enemy for a diabetic.

My point is that the average american consumes 2 to 3 times the recommended amounts of starch (grains/potatoes) every day. And not enough fruits and vegetables.
