alton brown graduated from the new england culinary institute. why wouldnt he be called a chef?

The Neelys always make me laugh because they always seem so fake and cheesy ALL of the time. Theyre like the polar opposite of Gordon Ramsay.
Why do people say the Neeleys are always fake and cheesy, yet everyone around them (Family, Friends, people who have been to their establishments) all state that that's the way they really are?

Rachel Ray is a cook because she is not formally trained. That's the difference between a cook and a chef - training.

Not all chefs receive formal training. There are Chefs out there in top restaurants that have never been to any cooking school.

For many the difference IS the training:

I DO know "chefs" in nice establishments (not formally trained) who OTHERS call "Chef", but who usually do not refer to themselves that way.
I suppose if someone "apprentices" under a Chef and learns from them, they could "on-Job-training" (OJT) themselves into the Chef title.
