Urban fantasy....

explain it to me? I'm not sure I quite follow and I don't want to jump into the conversation without knowing whether or not I've read any.

its fantasy set in current day. jim butchers dresden files, kim harrisons hollows, rob thurmans cal leandros, and rachel caines weather wardens are all examples of urban fantasy. its a type of writing that crosses over the paranormal genre to some extent.

Female leading characters written by men usually annoy me. Male leading characters written by females always, always (always) piss me off.

Off topic, but your thread made me think of it.

On topic now:

I hate urban fantasy now. The fad has started to rub me the wrong way, initially just by taking space on the shelves in the book stores away from my traditional fantasy, and now by just being mostly crap. I'm guessing that only 1 out of every 4 or 5 books on the shelves that I pick up from that sub-genre are anything but utter tripe.

no one has recommended the Gor books yet? Or is that too obvious?

I just looked up Gor, I am going to get the first book but I highly suspect that it is going to be just a bit over the top.

Ah! Thanks Grim. I've read a couple dresden files and they were okay for me. I don't think I've read enough of the genre to have an opinion. Though, I'll definitely check it out because now I'm realy curious.

a lot of the stuff by neil gaiman is urban fantasy. the only one that isn't, that i can recall off the top of my head, is stardust.

edit: ok wtf? a prime example of urban fantasy is neverwhere, a book which you hold in very high regard! you are clearly a crazy person.

make sure you check out the "outcast" series. its a spin off from the weather wardens and i liked it alot more.

I just read the first book and I did like it a lot. Having read her other series first I think my perspective is too skewed to decide rather or not I like it more. I did feel like it had a hell of a lot more cliff hanger than I am used to from her books and I am concerned with rather or not the gimmick that makes the series endearing (the demi-God made human with no real understanding of humanity) can survive the character development.

I'm curious, if this series continues, how Caine will stop from Cassiel just being a carbon copy of Joanne from the Weather Warden books.
