It took me 4 years to read the first 5 books. I kept getting distracted by other books.

In February I picked up book 5 again, and finally finished all of the rest.

A lot of people say the last couple of books are better, and I agree. I bought a Kindle around that time and it's been a delight reading with it.

I've come to adore Mat a whole lot...

Mat really becomes a much better character. He went from my least favorite to more or less my favorite over the last few books.

Currently re-reading these myself. When I read the 1st 11 the first time it was all in one stretch over about 4 months (this was right when number 11 came out.) So now that there are more books in it to read I decided to reread them all. I have a 45 min commute 4 times a week, so for those 90 minutes I listen to the audiobooks of WoT and then read where I left off. Currently on book 7. Going slower even with the supplement of audiobooks, but I suppose it was summer time last time I read them and I wasn't married with a kid...so my reading time has narrowed considerably.

The audiobooks aren't bad though. I find it easy to have it read every word. Like those 100 pg prologues....they kill me to read, but on the audiobook it just trucks on through and it's not a big deal.

Mat is an awesome character though, Perrin's always been the one for me that is the most boring of the 3 main males.

I don't think I ever skim anything in a book though...it's like a small OCD thing for me I think. I don't even really like to skim in text books. I'm definitely a slow reading compared to others, but I think I take in a lot more than someone who reads faster.

I'm looking forward to getting back to book 11, I remember that it basically felt like the entire book was leading to a climax on several parts and then there wasn't any resolution.

I think one of the biggest flaws in Jordan's writing is the large number of main character he has at any one time with nothing really to do. He keeps them in the books to maintain their presence even when their storyline is at a standstill while others catch up. The over-arcing story is 14 books long but no character's personal story needed to be more than 1 book.

Perrin is the biggest victim of this problem. He is the least interest character because he has the most drawn out and least interesting storyline. Every character has spent time sitting around turning their heels in second rate plotlines but his entire story seems to fall in to this pit. Jordan needed to establish a few things with him - his leadership, the army that follows him, his alliances, his personal character, etc. but this all could have been done in one solid plotline, not the drawn out mess that is his story due to Jordan needing to stretch it to 8 books instead of 1.

The only character I enjoy less is Egwene and the entire book of sitting outside the tower doing nothing.

Agreed.

Though, when I re-read the series recently, I really apriciated how much the characters develop. Doubly so for Rand, but the others as well. Perrin is probably the one who falls the shortest here, as he has almost no personal growth, things just change around him. (But then again, he was always the one who was the most "adult" of the the gang to start with..)
