I hope it does well, rare to see the genre get that kind of budget, 99% of stuff they push on TV lately I could care less about.
Leery though, reviews I have read so far seem to indicate the first 4 episodes are a bit weak and bogged down with background introductions before Martin's story begins to really shine, the 5th episode is supposed to be absolutely brilliant. For anyone that's read the books that should be no real surprise.
Unfortunately I suspect this will far surpass the attention spans of the great unwashed and without the ratings I can't see HBO putting down the kind of $$ it's going to take for the series to continue, stuff like the Battle of the Blackwater are going to be insanely expensive.
I think ep 1 is going to have to be insane, just to keep non readers to give it a chance. From that 15 min preview last week it looks like it should be. I'm guessing it's the thing with Ned in ep 5 you're talking about? I'm going to hate that part.

Are they doing more than one of the books? Or is just only game of thrones planned for right now?
Would probably depend on the ratings.
Like Galois said, some stuff is going to be insanely expensive. They canceled Rome b/c the sets and stuff were costing too much, but I'm sure ratings weren't that great. Also Martin isn't done with the series. If it gets picked up for a 2nd season, you'd figure that it would take probably about a year or so of time per book. Then you get into problems with Feast and Dance.
If they get at least 3 books worth done I'd be satisfied, plus I wanna watch Oberyn vs Gregor
