Just read Children of Hurin |
Sorry, I'm a bit dated on this one, but I figured I'd share with the book bored since it's here.
If you're not familiar with it, it was one of the short stories within The Silmarillion (Turin Turambar) that was expanded in to a short novel in 2007 by his son using J.R's notes and manuscripts.
It's a good read if you like Tolkiens works, but man was it depressing.

One day I decided to purchase whatever the big pop-fiction title everyone was raving about at the time just to see if the populace was on to something.
So I ended up with a copy of "Everything is Illuminated".
Very easily the worst fourteen pages I have ever read in my life.

i enjoyed the movie for that. i don't think i'd want to read the book though. i've never understood how so many seemingly terrible books are so popular.

Book popularity is even more prone to hype than movies or games because even more people have an utterly uninformed opinion on books. Some random ass book catches the right hype wave and it explodes far beyond its quality.
I also think pseudo intellectual ninnies are far more likely to 'like' a book that wasn't actually likable just because they think they are supposed to due to popular opinion. Look at Catcher in the Rye or Finnegan's Wake for example.

oh god. if i wasn't forced to read so many truly horrible books when i was in school, i wouldn't have hated reading for such a long time. i loved it when i was a child, then i entered high school and hated it for like 10 years. like normally it would be bad but i had a femenist teacher for english and we were forced to read HORRIBLE isht written by women. she was one of those womyn people.

My highschool was huge on minority authors so we were forced to read marginal garbage just because it was written by a poor Mexican. Tons of actually skilled minority authors out there and we didn't read any of them, instead we read the ones who had a tragic personal story.
Grow up poor and black, get molested by your father, write a bad book - tenth graders are forced to read it.
Then you had the standard piles of schlock to read like The Grapes of Wrath and The Sound and the Fury (I'm sorry Faulkner fans, the man was unbearable).
