Okay, I can't imagine how many times I've actually joked about selling a body part for the latest piece of hardware. But I've never actually gone through with it. Besides the fact I might need that body part someday, it's just really hard to find a hospital in the US that will actually buy body parts.
While even illegal in China, apparently a 17 year old boy was able to find some shady hospital that would take out his kidney and they paid him $3,400 for it (he should have shopped around more, it's got to be worth more than that). He used the money to buy an iPad 2 and some reports say an iPhone as well.
He came back home and his mom gave him the third degree on where he got the money for that stuff, he confessed on selling the organ. So she called the police. And it seems like he is having some complications as a result of the organ removal (from shady hospital and all).

The boy regrets the decision and his health is deteriorating. Hope he pulls through. But let his mistake be a lesson to the other Apple fanboys. iPad 2 + iPhone does not equal kidney! Don't do it! |

Some stories you just can't make up!
Best of luck to the boy and all others like him the world over, it's most unlikely that he's the only one.
We could have a really sick discussion about which pieces of hardware we think our various organs are worth, but in addition to being in extremely bad taste that would inevitably lead to "IBTL"!

In the event it was suddenly legal to sell a kidney in the USA. I would expect to get a cool 2 million (minimum) and a lifetime of health care for anything related to the loss of said kidney.
