The usage described would be nowhere near anything that would max out even the cheapest router nowadays imo. If you don't have access to the router, what else can you do besides updating your computer's network card driver, run windows update, etc. :\
Maybe you could buy a new one, stealth replace the old one (would your dad notice? hehe) and see if that fixes things.

i had the exact same issues. i tested it without the router and found it to be a bad modem. the modem kept fixing itself. now saying that, the modem wants to fix itself due to poor signals. make sure all your connections are good or have your cable company verify your connectivity to the modem if you find the issue continues even without your router in the mix.
if it stops when you take the router out then buy a new router!

I've ran my computer successfully with absolutely zero issues 3 times now when plugged directly into the modem so I can confidently say the modem is not the issue. I'm pretty sure the router is going bad at this point but with my father not caring about it I'm not going to spend 90 bucks to fix the problem. Thanks for all the help guys.

at the very least then, make sure the router's firmware is up to date and reset it to factory settings. might help, and cant hurt! gl
