Hi.
I know I should google this one, but you guys know best.

I am now a proud owner of a i5 Laptop with Windows 7.

I've always enjoyed win xp 32bit stuff as things have always been running best and fine, but now that my laptop is in the 64bit world, things are certainly to wrong.

To cut to the chase, I use sygate personal firewall 5.5 on my winxp PC which has served me many years well but it won't work with win7.

Now I know SPFirewall is an outdated thing but I really like using lightweight programs (let's not forget that using IE is most of the time a no-go and Firefox or w/e else should be used).
Are there any musthave firewalls for win7 or is that even redundant due to win7 internal firewall being more effective than normal?

So yeah, any free win7 firewalls to go for?

Thanks

Use the one in windows. It works fine as far as Software Firewalls go.

I will second that suggestion. MS's default Security Essentials is actually a rather good firewall now.

I'm using the free version of ZoneAlarm firewall and love it.

Okay thanks for the swift answer.

MSE isnt really any sort of firewall, it's just av. i would never trust the built in windows firewall for anything. i have used http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/free-download.html in the past and it's done really well. i would start there.

or do like i do and disable the windows firewall altogether and just get yourself a hardware firewall.

What is wrong with the Windows firewall in Windows 7?

It passes just about every 3rd party scan out there (Nessus, Qualys, et cetera, which are all enterprise class vulnerability scanners), if you use it correctly.

Personally, I'd trust it before something like Zoneminder or Norton's Personal Security any day of the week.

I would trust no firewall over norton's bloatware.

I find no issues with the windows7 firewall. I can see where it might be a little overwhelming for the normal users out there (same could be said for many firewalls though). Would def be something easy to F-up. But unless you are running your own server the defaults are pretty spot on.

I agree, I use windows firewall + router firewall along with microsoft AV and have had no problems.
