Amazon has been resisting California's demands to collect sales tax from it's customers. Apparently there is a group that is requesting people boycott Amazon until Amazon starts collects California sales tax.

I know California is hurting for money, but so is everyone else. Can't imagine too many people boycotting because they aren't being taxed enough.

If you ask me, sales tax is retarded to begin with. I understand paying income tax, but why the hell am I paying a tax because I want to buy something? I already paid my income tax, why am I paying another tax because I want to give money to somebody?
I buy something - let the seller pay income tax on the money I give them depending on their income, why am I being charged for it?
Nuts.

I don't even buy from NewEgg because they charge tax in Tennessee. Sales tax here is 9.75%, but no state income tax.

I've never understood why American based internet businesses could get away with no sales tax to begin with. Not for the state they're selling in, but the state they're selling from. A local business that doesn't charge sales tax gets in trouble, but the business with servers in the building next door to that local business has a web page with items for sale tax free. Doesn't quite seem right.

---------------

Here's the deal, if you live in Kansas and buy from amazon you have to pay sales tax because amazon has a distribution center there.

If the web company has a brick and motor building in the state they have to charge sales tax to people buying items that live in that state.

I live in oklahoma and no sales tax is added to my stuff even though their center is about an hour from me.

Amazon has a distribution center in Phoenix Arizona (just got a keyboard the same day I ordered it), but they don't charge sales tax here. So they are definitely not collecting sales taxes where they aren't being forced to.

Amazon even moved some of their Kindle operations out of California (or at least said they were) because of this sales tax issue there.

They canceled TX plans because of taxes. But pretty sure whoever that group is they are all connected to well off politicians.

it would put too much burden on businesses (remember 90%+ are small businesses) to comply with 52+ differing state sales tax laws (plus hundreds, maybe thousands more at the county level), so the solution was to put the burden on the purchaser to pay the sales taxes on the items himself.

when i purchase something from VendorA who does not have a store/location/warehouse/physical presence in my home state, i am not charged any sales tax. however, the law does say that i must still pay tax on that purchase. read your tax returns, it's right there (sales and use tax). buy a $1000 flat screen, you best set aside $100 now to cover sales tax due later.

so as you can see, it's not that "you don't have to pay sales tax on out-of-state purchases" - it's simply that people are evading the tax collection on those sales. (tax avoidance = legal, tax evasion = illegal)

what i really don't understand still, is how the federal government was able to ban the sale of cigarette tobacco through the mail. the USPS, fedex, UPS, any major carrier cannot transport over an ounce of cigarette tobacco. some places have started using a loophole by using courier-style delivery, but how long until that's added to the law. and if they were able to stop the sale of tobacco across state lines by forbidding carriers from handling it, how long will it be until the same is done for any other item for which people are evading sales tax?

another fun thing almost sure to be implemented in the next decade or so will the VAT, or value added tax. read up on it

So ok who is this vague 'coalition of non-profits'. The article only gives the

http://www.ThinkBeforeYouClickCA.org URL and that page is equally vague.

I'm getting kinda curious about these fruitcakes now.

p.s. cmon man 52+ is not onerous or anything. What we really need to do is regulate these businesses more! Maybe it's Nancy... oh man.
