i read the title as "wipe off" and i was like i use a can of air? maybe sometimes an old shirt when i'm taking them out and replacing them i guess. this is an odd question.

Wish I could do that. I got to return this bad WD 3TB drive back to WD soon. I'm doing a regular full format first. Then I'm going to use KillDisk.

For business, we outsource this work to the same company that handles our bulk desktop work. They strip em, magnetize em, then shred em. The leftover waste is sent in random waves for ultimate disposal (I am guessing China). It's the computing version of confidential document shredding.
Personally, I just magnetize the HDD for a day-or-so then beat it to crap with a hammer.
