he said it's been doing that pretty much forever, he has dsl right now but a couple years ago he had a t1 and was still having the same problem. i was going to have him ping his isp but i don't think i could i walk him threw it over the phone. his comp is only 3 years old or so unless there is a hardware problem it should be fine. i made sure his next gen java plug in was checked but i don't really know what other setting i can have him check. does anyone know anything else i can check?

edit: also flash and java are updated

and this happens on all websites

Choose location near you and far away. See what you get.

Could be the sites he is watching videos from are just very busy during the time period he is trying to access them.

In addition this could be due to CPU, drivers, cables, network hardware, etc. Network latency issues are the worst and with so many people watching Flash based video on their computers it hasn't gotten any better. I like your dad also use a ADSL connection. I use it because it is a lot cheaper than cable in my area. ADSL is fine for most stuff but when it comes to watching video content you are going to maxing out your bandwidth most likely. Depending on what I am watching I may reduce the resolution of the video and/or start it and pause it to max out the buffer before watching.

It might help if your dad has QOS compliant network hardware. Like I said at the start there are so many 'moving parts' when it comes to networking issues that you can go nuts trying to pinpoint all of the problems.

He could be short of ram. How much does he have?

If it's just two GB or less, upgrade to four.

His up rate while low isn't THAT bad. However, his DL rate is...bad. It should be at least double that. It is little wonder why he can't stream videos.

Could be problem on the line, or could be maybe the modem/router is starting to go bad. Even a bad filter on one of the phone jacks.

I would remove all the filters/other phones and turn off and on the modem/router and retest. If it does not improve it is more likely to be a line issue.

Low DSL speeds could be a result of distance from the node.
