Bear in mind it's only playable through a Steam account - probably not a problem for most, but definitely a game-breaker for some.

True but Steam has managed to handle the copy protection in a manner that is nearly transparent to the user.
That's as may be, but a lot of people fail to see why they should have to run an online account in order to play an offline game, and I'm inclined to agree with them.

It's funny how many people are ignorant of that feature.
Forgive me, I hadn't used Steam in years before New Vegas, and haven't had reason to use it since. Can you access that feature entirely offline, ie you don't need to log into Steam online first? It indicates in any event that you must be running the latest patched version for that option to be available, whereas with free-standing offline games it's your choice whether to patch or not as it's often the case that patches break as much as they fix, for example with Two Worlds 2.

If you ever want to access the offline mode without going online first with Steam you must first disconnect your computer from the internet completely. Once you've done that you can activate Steam and it will ask you to go to offline mode or to retry the connection.
The easier method is just to select the offline option when you are already online though.

It is "hidden" in a drop down menu which can be intimidating for some people. You do need Steam to install and I would guess for the first launch but after that no internet is required.

I didn't know drop down menus were considered hidden.

Hidden only in that it is not visible until you open the drop down menu. Steam isn't like Microsoft with drop down menus inside drop down menus inside drop down menus though which is good.

Thanks for clarifying that.

There's no need to disconnect from the network completely (I.E. unplug the cord or switch off the router). Just click on "offline mode" in the menu. Or, if you're paranoid, right click the network icon and go offline.

Isn't that still disconnecting from the internet completely?
