If you just click the little gear thing up in the right you can change it to a more acceptable format.
I like the new look, but I use Google Docs a lot and it has been there for a while so maybe I am just used to it.

The "compact" mode is ok, but it is still not as easy to use as it was before.
I have a lot of folders that filter my messages and below that I have my friends that I can chat with. With the original layout I could just whip the mouse wheel up and down and see everything. Now I have to go grab some sliver of a pane and drag it up and down. It is just silly and awkward, not a change that was needed.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the new layout. Or a fan at all for that matter.
