I can understand they need to research what the hackers got access to. But it kinda sucks finding out almost a week later that your personal information, passwords, and credit card information has been stolen.

While passwords and credit card information is encrypted, I figure I'll at least change my Steam password (don't think I ever used their forums). But looks like the system is too busy and can't process my request, "try again later". Oh well.

I was trying to figure out why I couldn't access steam, so I decided to browse random forums while I try to access it again. That is how I found this thread

Anyways, I finally logged into steam 30s ago, so hopefully everyone else can access it now.

I don't use the Steam forums ever since I got banned plus I haven't had a single issue with my account either. I wonder if that means I'm fine?

It would be nice for them to personally contact anyone that might have been compromised.

This makes no sense. Last time this happened, it was to Sony, and the public held Sony by a noose.

Because sony waited longer and first said there was no real cause for alarm. Later finding out that hey we did not encrypt anything and oops our bad. Sony tried to cover their asses first and instead got lambasted for it as they should of.

It took Sony weeks to own up to it, and on top of it all their statement iirc was quite vague. On the other hand, there was a problem noted with Steam Forums, they are taken offline pretty quickly, and a couple days later we get a notice of what they had access to and what we should look out for.

Not only that, an open statement that passwords and credit card data were hashed and salted is a good thing as well. Contrast this to Sony not stating this immediately and upfront, (even Googling it now yields rampant accusations of plain-text, which they later denied) and its just not even in the same ballpark.

I'm not saying Steam is completely blameless, but its far better than how Sony handled things. Lets also not forget that Sony was compromised multiple times, and that PSN was down for quite some time.

I think its not so much any one thing on Sonys end, but a combination of things.

Changed my Steam password - just to be safe.

By salting passwords, does it protect them from ghosts?
