I have a 3 year old system that just isn't cutting it for SWTOR. At times I get great frame rates even with in game settings maxed but all too often it drops below 30fps. I'm looking to upgrade the video card now. I don't plan to do any other upgrades since I will likely buy a new system sometime in 2012. Here's my current specs:
nForce 680i SLI-capable MB (PCI-Express 1.0)
Core 2 Duo E8400 3Ghz
Vista 32-bit
4GB RAM
GeForce GTX 260 896MB
1280x1024 monitor
I'm undecided between a GTX 560, Radeon 6870, and GTX 560 Ti. I have a preference for nVidia but since I likely will use this new card for less than a year (I'll be getting a next gen card when I get the new system) I'm open to taking a chance on AMD. I'm looking to spend under $230 (current price on GTX 560 Ti at Amazon and Newegg).
What do you suggest I get?
Will prices on higher end AMD cards (eg 6970) go down when the 7000 series comes out next month? Any word on when the nVidia 600 series is coming out?

I like the 560 TIs, good card, and could even compliment a new system nicely (get a second one when you buy your new system and go SLI)

Currently in the MMO unemployment line.
Can I get $15/month for not playing them?

The graphics card wont be your bottle neck, but if you can't go wrong with the 560 TI.
For reference, I notice some slowdown on TOR maxed out with my phenom II X4 / 560 TI. It isn't my GPU causing the problem; girlfriends sandy bridge i7 eats the game with a gtx 260.

I got perfectly acceptable if not very good frame rates on Korriban but in Dromund Kaas I've been getting a lot in the 25-30 fps range. I guess because it's just bigger with more open spaces. In beta there was a graphic setting to control the clipping range that would probably help. I wonder if there is a way to hack that into the ini file.

What cpu cooler do you have? I bet you could bump that wolfdale to 4Ghz extremely easily and see if you see a diff. I bet you will.

Same here, but the smooth performance of the game never falters.
People get too hung up on frame rates in my view, not least in single person RPGs and MMORPGs.
What you haven't told us is how the game is running.

i upgraded from a gtx 280 to a 560 ti soc. pretty noticeable improvement i must say.
the 280 died on me though so it was a forced upgrade.
i wouldnt recommend a 560 ti less than the twin frozr ii or gigabyte soc versions however.
personally i have the 1ghz gigabyte version and it runs skyrim at 60 fps on ultra settings (with shadows set to high because the ultra ones drop fps by some ridiculous amount) + fxaa.

The performance hit is indeed very notable when the framerate drops below 30 fps. I upgraded to the latest beta drivers this morning and turned on high quality textures in game and for some reason performance has improved considerable (or maybe it's just I'm leveling casually and so there are fewer players around to drag down my framerates).
Anyway I went ahead and ordered a GTX 560 Ti and feel confident that should make the game play and look great. Thanks for the suggestions, all.
