So I have been installing Windows updates (50 updates on a new install of Win 7), and It has been trying to install #45 "Internet Explorer 9".

It has been sitting there on this install for 40 minutes...

Im tempted to go to bed and let it keep going, then check in the morning.

Is this a known issue, is it normal, abnormal, etc.

My only option is to "stop installation", but I dont know if that will cancel the other 44 programs that have been downloaded and installed.

Help!

minimize the windows update windows and check to see if a new window had opened up for the internet explorer install. if thats the case, all you need to do is hit next on the internet explorer install and answer a few questions and let it proceed.

graard is correct for most people. For some reasons it opens up a separate install window behind the normal windows update window. It's very annoying. And ie9 is a good browser, I prefer chrome, but ie9 is just fine. It's not like ie8 and lower that were just hogs.

Wont matter, wont have much of a choice soon unless you deliberately circumvent it which most people wont.

Because IE9 sucks and is full of security holes. You are much better off loading up the Firefox browser from mozilla.org or Chrome from Google -- once they install and start up, click Yes on the little box that asks if it should be the default browser.

Correct me if I'm wrong but don't some programs still use IE for some things? So wouldn't having the most up-to-date version still be beneficial even though you don't use it?

IE is indeed still required by some programs, and in any event Firebox has also had its own security problems. There is no absolutely safe browser.
