The timing could be a coincidence. But just yesterday Megauploads was one of many sites protesting SOPA by having some sort of voluntary outage.
Well it seems the government is going to make that outage permanent, as Megauploads has been shutdown for being a piracy criminal enterprise.

And this also comes just a month after Megauploads got into a fight with Universal Music over a promotional video Megauploads made using several Universal artists such as Will.I.Am and P Diddy. The promo had no copyrighted music in it, but UMG was able to send a very vague takedown notice to YouTube and get the promo removed.
UMG even went so far as to remove some video blogs of journalists discussing the Megauploads vs UMG fight. This Week In Tech for example got pulled off YouTube for discussing the story. They fought back and was able to get their episode put back on YouTube later.
Megauploads is a free file sharing site and it definitely has pirated materials on it. But it's odd that this happens the day after the SOPA protest, the site has been around for years. |

i like the timing...maybe they are trying to scare off the protestors lol. can't really sympathize since those dl sites are full of pirated stuff

I don't understand how they can do this. Megauploads clearly states that copyrighted material isn't allowed and that all you have to do is contact them and they removed an offending file. You can't expect a website to violate their member's privacy and check every single thing they upload to see if it is legal. No one would ever use the site!

Anonymous sure is quick. They've already taken down mpaa.org, justice.gov, riaa.com, and universalmusic.com. Working on whitehouse.gov now.

All the has to happen is the MPAA.ORG sends a cease order to the provider hosting the sight or the people that manage the IP addressing org and without proof, a site is unreachable. The sight then must fight to prove its innocent. Thats the problem with this S--t, your guilty until proven innocent.

What a crock of s**t. Why don't they try that with the google team, since there is nothing you can do on that site you cant do with google if you know wtf your doing...

This is a despotic government desperately seeking to extend not just physical command and control but psychological command and control. I hope these authoritarian clods end up creating many thousands of anti government minded people.

So today at work, one of my coworkers was annoyed cause they took down his mother's funeral videos from Vietnam that his father had uploaded because he wasn't able to attend. Ironic they used Megauploads...
