i'm guessing you have the big black boxy looking one? my parents had that one since the fios service came to our area. eventually i told them to call verizon and tell them the router broke so they would send a new one out. it is pretty nice having the gigabit plus the wireless N.

Not that big really, but yeah. Figured I would try to do it when had to swap out a cable card. Either to busy or just too lazy to set it up .

An idea for a router could be the Netgear N900 (WNDR4500). A bit costly but worth it I think.
I have it's old version the WNDR3700 and it has been rock solid for several years. This new iteration is supposed to allow for 450mbit/sec transfer speeds on the 2.4 and 5 GHz radios. Has printer sharing, 128RAM, 128MB flash memory and 600MHz+ processor.

I've had Fios for about 4 years, no problems with the router. We can get a singnal anywhere in the house and out on the deck. Downloading speeds haven't been bad at all on the wireless.

I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with the router you get with FIOS. my issue seems to be that the wireless signal does not broadcast very well. I can be sitting in the same room as the router with a clear line of sight and still be getting only 1 or 2 bars of service. the speeds when downloading through wireless also take quite a great hit as well. i understand that wireless is naturally always going to be slower then a wired connection but its like having dial up. anyone have any thoughts or work arounds to help improve the wireless signal? Thanks.
What type of wireless router is it?

Those are the same we are going to possibly be using for our FTTP service starting up in two weeks, except we have the slightly newer versions that provide Wireless N. We may be switching to Pace (formerly 2Wire) though.
My suggestion is to do a Factory Rest on it (hold the button in on the back for a full 10 seconds), let it reboot and download any firmware it might try.
After that is done, go in and enable the WiFi setting and crank it up to full power, which it should be on that model of gateway by default anyways.
Test it out.
If it is still crap, take it back and get them to replace it for you because something is probably faulty on it.

anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this router?

reviews on amazon seem to be mixed as well as newegg. im not trying to break the bank on this since the wireless is useable in other rooms but it would be nice to get the most our of my service.
