Solitude is cheap..

I got acers of solitude down south.. a open fireplace, a beach and a sauna by the lake.

so yes we like it that a way!

I'm so jealous. We have far too many people living in Germany. Of course we tried to remedy that during the centuries, especially the last one, but it didn't really help.

You know as they say.. Try, try, try again.

i don't like movies where rape features heavily as a theme. it's just not why i go to the movies.

i liked some aspects of the film, but on the whole it was too gratuitously violent for what it accomplished. also, the retribution was way too contrived. it felt more sci-fi or fantasy than drama. the writer would have done better to set it in the future.

edit - last night around the dinner table i was put in the awkward position of having to explain to my grandmother why the film didn't appeal to me. she was saying that she liked it. a disturbing interchange, to say the least.

I don't understand why they remade it when the foreign film was modern and the actress in the original was freaking awesome and unique. Maybe I will watch this when it is on Netflix.

oh, i didn't realize they had remade it. i guess i live under a rock. i saw the swedish version a year ago.

it figures that hollywood would do something like this. americans hate reading subtitles. hate reading in general, i should say.

American movie-goers are borderline illiterate, lazy and incredibly nationally introverted. It's not a good situation for foreign films.

I enjoy many subtitle movies. My ex-gf hated them though. Lately I have been watching japanese subtitled vids.

Maybe, but when it comes to film, Americans much more so than any other country I have visited.

Americans are exposed to far less media (news, film, literature) from other countries/cultures than are citizens of most other developed nations (particularly Europe, but also most places where English isn't the main language). So it makes sense that we find subtitles unpalatable; we never have to deal with them.

I just started reading the book this week, before seeing the new movie. So far I'm pretty hooked, although it is a bit slow the first 50 pages of the book. There's a lot of background information right at the start that you have to plod a little way through to get to the meat.
