I don't know what is more comic, the sudden aversion the right has for war, or the fact that they treat competent diplomacy and the appropriate application of implied force as a manipulation into war. I mean granted, that's what the GOP would do (i.e. GWB) but the Dems have been sabre rattling for decades WITHOUT going to war.

The regime in Iran needs a credible threat from the outside to keep the critics silent and the population on their side. They fear another uprising. They don't want to be the next Libya. An enemy that unites everyone is the perfect solution. And they have picked America for obvious and not so obvious reasons. America is a credible threat. Everyone knows they can and do attack if poked enough. America has the ability and the will. And unlike another potential enemy, Israel, America is quite predictable. Pissing off Israel enough may result in the whole region going boom, whereas pissing off America may result in the loss of a few ships and military installations. A price the rulers are very willing to pay if it means they can quell their internal enemies.
