Try Florida Avocados, they are lower in fat (and bigger) than the California/Hass Avacados. They have less flavor but you can add things like garlic, olive oil, salad, etc.

My mother planted an avocado seed in her backyard. The tree has grown pretty big (taller than the house) but no fruit yet! I think it's about 5 years old so should start producing soon.
Avocado plants bloom better when there is another male/female plant in bloom nearby. If there isn't another Avocado tree in bloom with the opposite gender blooms then it is going to be tough for your mom's tree to produce fruit.

That's weird that trees have sexes. I guess it makes sense that you wouldn't want it to pollinate itself. I wonder if that's every tree's dream?

the city i live in was once an enormous avocado grove. needless to say, i don't know what life is like w/o them in everything.

love avocado.. they are about 1,5$ each here.. 
and often shitty or too hard.. perfection is hard to attain, my dad has been on the quest for the perfect avocado for years.. he basically injects and snorts it.
He puts it in everything too, his guagc reciep is otherwordly.
