Bonk this is something you don't want haunting you. For $850 I can handle this for you with no further hassle from the IRS.

I got a tax bill on December 23. I wrote "Merry Christmas douchebags!" on the cheque.

I just wish they told me earlier and they only gave me a few weeks to respond. It was just a mistake on my part I guess

Just be glad your "mistake" wasn't 540,000 dollars like mine was.

You have to respond quickly, you don't have to pay quickly.
You can pay in full now.
You can set up an installment plan and pay X per month. However, there is a fee to set up and the interest will continue to add up (.5% per month)
You can also request up to 120 days to pay in full and avoid the cost of setting up a payment plan (though you still pay more interest). Choose that and you avoid the cost to set up the installment plan.

when i had to pay back extra (about $2000) because i filled out my return incorrectly the tax office had to come to an agreement with me for paying it off. I could have said $5 per month and they'd have to agree but i said $10 because i am just a great guy.
then they took all of my tax return to pay off the outstanding amount during the next tax season
