The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, DC – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill.
SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused.
Not completely destroyed, but at least he's standing up to it.

sopa and pipa aren't dead....sopa is going to be taken up again in feb and pipa is being brought up for a vote on jan 24th(i don't remember?)
omaba is threatening to veto for all the same wrong reasons he threatened to veto the ndaa....and it has nothing to do with him protecting anything good....and as seen with the NDAA he will flip flop at a moments notice when he thinks no one is looking like he did on new years eve with the ndaa

Obama can at least symbolically veto SOPA/PIPA if they have veto-proof majorities (which sounds unlikely at this moment) where vetoing the veto-proof NDAA ends up hurting soldiers, vets, etc for a few days while the veto override goes through. Fortunately, SOPA/PIPA are bills in their own right and not parts of a larger spending bill so there are no bad side effects from a veto.

Well, to be fair, as one of his biggest critics on NDAA, he did sort-of stand up. He forced them to delete the really awful language and replace it with less awful but still awful language.

I still say no one really gets the NDAA thing. All it does is give congressional backing to the current legal understanding of detainee issues. Current as of 6-7 years ago.

if SOPA went in effect, hackers would have a ball shutting off websites systematically by posting/hacking links to illegal content in them and then calling them in...it would have made government accessory on new generation of Denial of Service attacks
