Nothing semantic about it. Left-right in the context of modern complexities and US politics is "broken". The system for categorizing that way is meaningless. We've discussed it here ad nauseum.
When you say "left" / "right", or "liberal" / "conservative", that gives a rational person no idea whatsoever where you sit on many important issues. "Democrat" vs "Republican"... similar problem.
A system mapping...
fiscal liberal<->conservative
social liberal<->conservative
statism<->individualism<->anarchy
...gets you a bit closer. But in another decade or two, I don't think that will cut it either.

I think I shall compile an entire post with some of my more progressive positions, and see who (really) falls to the "left" or "more progressive" end of the continuum than I do.
And I'm not talking Democrat or Republican sales pitches. I mean PROGRESS and PROGRESSIVE, civil rights affirming, change-oriented, forward thinking.
