Obviously you've never seen a knife fight, a skilled fighter with an edged weapon can hurt people bad and finish them off if need be. Now if there are two or more of them.

Of course if only 1 person stands up to 4 in a knife fight the odds are against him. But there were how many passengers and how many terrorists? The odds were against the terrorists, but because of their own fear they did nothing. So the odds were 1000000000:1 that they would survive. Had they stood up and fought instead of giving into fear and despair their odds would have been way better.
But factor in close quarters and having to fight 1 at a time while the other terrorists try to stop the other passengers from joining then the odds are better. 1 person with a knife vs 1 person that isnt scared of said knife. You can live from a knife wound most of the time (not always but most of the time). If he knew how to use it then you might not, but it would encourage others to join. Now say the others stood up and found their courage because 1 stood against several then they could have stopped it.
The plane was pretty narrow 1 maybe 2 in an alley fighting the terrorists who had make shift weapons (supposedly). So 1 person at a time would be fighting and the other passengers could have helped to stop them. They didnt try I dont think. But still they only had knives. You might get hurt but more than likely you would live especially if other passengers would have joined in the effort. Who knows if the terrorists had training or not with knives and close quarter combat, but the numbers were against the terrorists, had passengers got involved. But they didnt so they died. I couldn't just stand by and watch. Especially with the adrenaline and training that most military people got. Its not all that different. But for civilians or people that cannot react under extreme pressure its no wonder most people would cower in a corner and ball their eyes out and not try to make a stand. Its sad.
