WTF is the difference between a living room and a family room? Arn't those the same thing?

I believe the living room is a mutant descendant of the parlor or sitting room of old. It is the room near the main entrance that is used to entertain guests in a more formal setting and without introducing them to the rest of the household space. You fill it with higher end furniture and decorations to demonstrate your earthly success and crap like that. In my family, this is the 'front' room rather than the living room.

Why do you call it the living room if what it's for is anything but actually living?

Growing up our "living room" was apparently what you people call a "family room."

The new house has a traditional late 19th century layout. Although it has been modernized, there isn't an open concept floor plan like in my current house. I don't know how much I will miss that. The living room has been turned into a nice family room, but it is separated from the kitchen by a hallway. Off of that is a huge formal dining room with pocket doors and a pseudo-turret, so we'll probably use that for entertaining.

I have no idea. As I said we called it a front room, but living room is a much more common term. Perhaps irony?

This thread has actually been an educational experience for me. How often does that happen on the Outpost?

I always thought a living room was where you actually lived. Since that's how it was in my house.

Apparently in Real America (tm) a Living Room is where you don't live and a Family Room is where you all direct your attention towards a screen.

The terms I'm used to are...

"Living Room"

"Den"

The Den is slang for "where the family hangs out". The "Living Room", ironically, is not.

Sometimes I've heard "Living Room" (the museum furniture room), and "Family Room" (which makes a little more sense as the room where family actually congregates).

I usually use "Front Room" to describe the largely unused room by the front door, and use "Family Room" and "Living Room" interchangeably to describe the room our TV / PS3 / etc are in.

I tend to think of a "den" as a room in the middle of the house that often doubles as an office. It's not a very common term that I use.

You guys must be anti social. We have big family gatherings a few times a year and dinner parties/poker/get togethers at least once or twice a month. Having two rooms that are separate and relatively private from each other is awesome.

PS. I have a living room/family room/den(office)

Everyone calls the family room the room you hang and watch tv in and the living room you entertain in.

I live in an Flat so we only have the one common space like a lounge/living room. When we have people over its almost always for a BBQ and everyone is outside in the courtyard. We have a strange concept to our kitchen to, it has 2 doors that open out into the courtyard with just the kitchen bench (sink and cooktop) in between them. It works well for entertaining
