France suspended its training operations in Afghanistan and threatened to withdraw its entire force from the country early after an Afghan soldier shot and killed four French troops Friday and wounded 15 others. The shooting — the second such attack in a month — came during a particularly deadly 24 hours for the international military coalition. Six U.S. Marines also died in a helicopter crash late Thursday.

clicky

So the war that was going to be focused on, is being lost, along with losing allies. Spectacular.

Fixed that for you.

Basically "ZOMG WE LOST 4 SOLDIERS LET'S GO HOME!"

"Allies" like that? We probably can do without.

When you are involved in a spectacularly bad situation of your own choosing, people become entrenched and usually continue to dig themselves in deeper. Its hard to admit error and reverse course. Usually you need something to latch on to, even if it could be viewed as trivial.

'This is a terrible idea, we were all idiots, lets just admit that' is never going to attract much support.

'This was a good idea at the time, we are all brilliant, but this one thing was unpredictable and it changes everything' is much easier.

Koneg has no problem with the pointless deaths of the kids over there. But some people actually do. Good for France.

Fourth largest contributor to Afghan campaign pulling out after being stabbed on back TWICE by same people they've set to help isn't a minor issue.

Though my gut says this is just huff and puff circus act to folks at home as it's presidential election year in france...France will get an apology and promise of more security, Afghanistan will get bigger contributions from France and Sarkozy will get +1 to street cred.

Never said it was, but I will point out that them even hinting at bailing out over this means that it's definitely going to happen again.

"Really? If we shoot some more of your troops you'll leave? Wow WTF - that was easy!"

The problem seems to be, the shooter was theoretically a member of the armed forces of the government France is supporting, rather than a 'freedom fighter' or what have you. It seems safe to assume that if the military starts attacking its allies, the allies will leave.

This is also second time things like this has happened...if US military members one by one started shooting at its allies there would have to be full blown investigation...unless that happened in air force, then it'd be ok!
