Ask them to additinally to the sum pay for or otherwise provide a decent medical exam from a third party (a clinic not dependant on the insurance company).
Or some compromise involving a medical, maybe a lower sum etc.
It's happened to me too but I didn't make a decision until the docs said: not likely to have perm damage from the rear-ending. Obv. the cost distribution is a bit different in Sweden.
Edit: reread, if it's already established he's OK, take the money and /shrug

What about the damage to the vehicle? $1000 might not cover the cost of repairs.
He was a passenger, it was not his car.

Is there a deadling on accepting the $1000?
I'd hold off until then and go to the doctor and get checked first to see if there's anything that might be there, but not felt yet.
I'd at least want to break even with present and future medical bills.

This. Definitely get a medical examination a few weeks after the accident.
