Jobs was good at what he did, which was definitely a lot more marketing than anything else. But he was very good at it.

The problem with UNIX wizardry is that while it might help with back-end office stuff and with 35 year old virgins, it doesn't have any *direct* impact on the average mouth-breathing Walmart shopper. Stable server environment and revolutionized inventory management? They won't ever see that. iPhone on sale for 50 bucks off? They'll definitely see that.

I didn't mean on the outpost. I meant in general, most people don't even know wtf he is and what he's accomplished considering that without him god knows how set back we'd be in the IT world.

I never heard of him until this thread. Sounds like a helluva inventor.

He was so ignored that his name wasn't even spelled properly in the subject of this thread!

So when the amazing Mr Ritchie died and had a thread here to mourn him, our amazing Canadian Hipster missed it while fanboiing for the newest latest game release?
Color me shocked.

Wow didnt even knew he had died. Its probably because he was best known as a team

Kernigan & Ritchie

Edit: inventing things is a soecial thing but productizing an invention is just as important. Steve jobs created products people use - thats worth something just as much (if not more) than the scientist who came up with the tech.

Ex. You have paint and materials nd then you have an artist that applies it to a paper and creates a painting. Both are highlights of genius.

Actually 4/5 people who alter the world in a significant way aren't much in the spotlight.
It doesn't affect much really imho.

Noone notices when ugly people die either.

i.e. Code is not pretty. iPads are pretty.

Steve Jobs is also prettier than Richie. His name is too.
