initial velocity doesn't seem to be continued in the times it came down and killed someone. The reason firing stright up versus a slight angle is so different is the bullet is still spinning. Giving it much greater aerodynamics and a much higher terminal fall velocity. At least that's how I read the mythbuster write up.
So like the different between throwing a spiral nearly straight up and straight up.

Yeah, but almost everyone shoots not exactly straight up. So that's kinda a pointless fact. Most people firing into the air are doing so in such a way they might end up killing someone.

I imagine where the bullet lands is also important. Considering your head is the largest target for things failing from the sky, I bet fatalities are much more likely.
Plus, I saw it on the movie [i ]The Mexican so it must be true.

If you remember they concluded bullets that fall straight down don't do so with lethal velocity but bullets fired in an arch, as most are, many times are lethal.
