they obviously have the infrastructure to deliver their content to anybody
so why cant i just call them up and say 'gimme'? why do i still have to have an archaic television subscription of some sorts?

contracts. they could never survive off a subscription model without infrastructure providers getting them in the door in nearly every house in america. So those contracts won't let them sell direct. i'm not even sure they'd want to. A lot of the general costs of doing business are completely absorbed by others for them right now.
