It is pretty funny to see a company outsourcing jobs TO America, though.

IKEA is doing the same thing. It is cheaper to build their crap here at $8-$10/hour than pay the fat, happy and lazy Swedes to do the same and than pay to ship them over here.

Elkad has mentioned before that he lives in a trailer. He's not exactly a good baseline for an American/Canadian standard of living.

Yup. Trailer. I paid cash for it. And unlike half of America, my net worth is greater than zero. We are eyeballing a house on 4 acres nearby, but not sure if we want to be $30k in debt.

$16.50 would be a big pay jump for me (about double). From talking to people who work assembly lines, especially high tech ones, if your IQ is over 70, the only difficulty is not going insane from boredom.

As to the guys at that plant. Yeah, they may be qualified for something other than McDonalds. But if it's a small town, 500 people is a big flood on the job market. So even if you land a "skilled" position, the competition for the spot is enough to drive the pay down to McDonalds levels.

Since minimum wage (full time, one person) is plenty for a couple people to live on, wages can fall to that level easily.

That sounds perfectly reasonable for a job a monkey could probably do. Especially considering they are probably getting another $25/hr in benefits.

Apparently, the same could be said about your job.

I'm sure you'd line up to take a 50% pay cut to help your struggling business that reported significant profits survive, right?

If CAT got a single dollar in tax relief when they purchased that plant, they sure as he-double-hockey-sticks better be forced to repay every single penny.

The funniest part is, the Federal government is blaming the provincial government for letting it happen.

At my last job there was talk of pay cuts. I was the ONLY member of the command staff that spoke up and said the pay cuts should start at the top. There ARE people willing to give up money in the best interest of an organization. I don't see how "join a union" makes a person "qualified" for anything, tbh. Might as well join the Nancy Drew Fanclub, lol.

Also, people CAN get by on very little. They just have to learn that the world doesn't owe them cable, a cell phone, etc. It can be tough but it can be done. Doing without would actually be the BEST thing that could happen to a lot of people. I'm not advocating starvation, I'm simply saying that people have their priorities a bit jacked up.

I join our Canadian brothers in their outrage against the Canadian owners of this company that obviously sold them out for a fat profit.
They knew full well what CAT was after, and made the deal to kill your jobs anyways. This damages my view of Canadians being above greed.

True enough.

Now, say that to 450 workers with a straight face when your company reported record growth and profits.
