Seriously, this game is expensive enough for competitive play, but to change bat rules and force parents to shell out $300 for a bat that may or may not last till next year is crazy.
Damn I wish my kids played football instead...
$200/month for playing on a team.
$xx gas/hotel for weekend travel.
$300 for team uniforms, bags, batting helmet, etc
$300 for catching equipment ( my son's are catchers )
$100 for fielding glove ( plays infield when not catching )
$300 for a bat.
I probably spend $5k/yr on baseball.
Doesnt include the pitching machine or batting cage I built in my garage. Or the heavy bag I put in the garage as well. Or the lessons..

your league is probably owned by a bat supplier or some such nonsense.
its the same for competitive cheeleading. all the diffrent leagues out there are owned by one parent company, that sells all the costumes.

Why do they need their own equipment? The league should provide the catchers gear at least. I didn't get my own bay until I was at least in middle school.

Little League provides equipment.
My son does select ( travel ) ball as well as Little League during the Spring ( Travel ball rest of the year ).
Go look at Dicks Sporting Goods, Just bats, Cheap bats, etc online...most of the bats are in the $200-$300 range.
Its nuts.

That just seems crazy, but I haven't bought a bat in decades.

When I was a kid I think it was $20/season to play baseball. My Dad coached most years so the fee was waved for me and my brother.

The change in the bat rules has to do with safety. The alloys needed to make a 'deader' metal bat are expensive.
If it makes you feel better, it's not just there. Our local softball league just went to wood bats for the same reason.
As far as the money, the expenses you list are common fare for any involvement in competitive sport. Football would be no better. Neither would soccer.
But, like my dad used to say, better sports equipment and fees then bail money and a lawyer.
Oh, and GL. Practice should be starting soon if it hasn't already.
