I still find it funny that we have such a massive country but next to one living in it.
not that I mind ,or anything. It's a wonderful thing having all this open space and awesome wilderness

I'll never understand why for instance, big states like Texas build houses right on top of each other when they have the kind of space they do.

In all seriousness, it is all about city living on the US border. There is a lot of Canadian land that is mostly unusable or currently inaccessible for good chunks of the year. Add that to the lack of travel infrastructure and there just isn't a lot of living in a lot of Canada.
I've spent some time up in the Lac La Ronge area and northern mid-western Canada is awesome. If I were going to live totally off the grid, I could see going all Jeremiah Johnson up there, eh?
