Not just pay it down but paid it off and destroyed the second bank of the US in the process.
It took them till Lincoln to get a central bank back (roughly)

He fought a war against them after seeing members of his family killed as a small child. No doubt his actions towards native americans were horrible but his overall legacy is one of being a Patriot and a great leader.

He was an interesting dude. The civil war could very well have broken out 20 years earlier if we'd had a weaker president. Then again, by the time he got done pissing off the central bank and causing a panic, everyone was too worried about the economy to poke each other with bayonets for awhile.
