I'd say that a Merc or a BMW is cooler then the local brands.
and I'd say that a Lamborghini or a Ferrari is way cooler then say a Mustang.

It's a complex question without an easy answer.
It really depends on the demographic your are talking about tbh.
Cars are a symbol status in the US. Which brand and what they mean is up to the individual.
And Mannegram, although I can appreciate a Ghini or a Ferrari, my dream car is actually a Mustang.

BMW and Mercedes usually screams I AM A DOUCHEBAG PLEASE VANDALIZE ME AND BEAT MY OWNER.
Lambos, not so much.

I agree a vintage muscle car is pretty f'kin awesome.. but I'd still take the Mercedes SLS before it..

This obviously varies by what part of the country you're in.
BMW's are pretty universally considered to be the "prick is on the inside" cars. (Some of you will get that joke). Going with the part of the country where I have a lot of "normal folk" relatives...
Mercedes are actually pretty passable. I have relatives in IN, MN who are union foremen, electricians, etc. They are a-ok with a Mercedes rolling by. It is pretty universally considered 'quality'.
VW's are simultaneously mocked, for some reason.
Volvo's are laughed at or looked at askance as "sissy" or "pansy".
Ferrari's are considered OK and incite envy. Lambos get sneers of being "ridiculous toys"... too extravagant.
EVERYONE seems OK with a Ducati bike. Even Harley owners. Ducati is just something apart. Moto-Guzzi's are also OK. (Lots of cops used to ride those, back in the day).

Depends on the person really but any car regardless of where it's made can be seen as a status symbol.
I drive a sweet as Hyundai excel. All the ladies love it! I put a spoiler on the back to give it better handling. Put some sweet chrome hubcaps on it to. When I get it lowered its gonna be a sweet ride

Nobody I know in America considers a Hyundai a status symbol.
The sporty/modified ones are passable for an 'up and comers' first car. But that's about it.
Scion has gotten a 'hip' image and passes as a decent quirky first or 2nd car. Hyundais... yeah, not so much. Although their rep has come a way from about 6-8 years ago where they were simply ridiculed on sight.

Scions are treated no worse or no better then Toyotas - which is what they are anyway.
Hyundai's rise has as much to do with Kia's introduction into the market as an increase in quality. Hyundai is no longer the shittiest cars around - Kia's are.
And Ghinis are often seen as ridiculous toys because you can't drive them here. Most lambos can't even get out of second gear anywhere in the US.
European cars are generally a mixed lot and have a lot to do with the country of origin. The French can't build cars. Except for the Lotus and the RR, neither can the British (sorry, Jags are piles of junk). Germans obviously builds nice cars (BMW, Audi, Mercedes). Italians build nice exotic cars but can't build an everyday driver to save their lives. The Swedes build quality cars but they are devoid of personality.
